Positive body image is a big trend in fashion and media right now. But short guys seem to be left out.
Being short mildly sucks. I’m not systemically oppressed or anything, but there’s definitely disadvantages. I walk super fast to keep up with people. I occasionally get mistaken for a child–which is why I grow a mustache. And people literally look down on me.
I’ve only felt tall once. I was in a store and this little kid was reaching for a toy on a high shelf. He asked me to grab it, and I did. It was nice.
A study in the Journal of Applied Psychology says for every inch you’re taller, you get a salary bump of almost 800 dollars.
But, the way I see it, everyone has some sort of disadvantage, and being short isn’t all bad. Legroom is never an issue. I can stand in the front row at shows without blocking anyone. And I’m not afraid of falling over, because it’s not a far plunge.
I guess it’s all about perspective. While everybody’s looking down on me, I’m the only one looking up.
