The 2020 presidential election is over a year away, and Democratic candidates are already trying to appeal to millennials and Generation Z.

And they should, since one in 10 eligible voters in the 2020 election will be members of Generation Z, or people ages 18 to 23. So far, there are a total of 10 Democrats in this race, and President Donald Trump is the only Republican candidate.

Here’s a round-up of the social media reaction to the Democratic candidates so far.

Cory Booker

New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker is the latest candidate to throw his hat in the ring. Booker’s announcement generated a lot of buzz on social media. A few people were not afraid to bring up blemishes from his past, saying Booker couldn’t count on their vote.

Pete Buttigieg

Pete Buttigieg is making a pitch to LGBTQ voters as he hopes to become the first openly gay presidential nominee of a major party. The 37-year-old, two-term mayor of South Bend, Indiana, said in a campaign video that, “Our country is ready for a fresh start.”

His campaign seems to give the millennial LGBTQ community the same hope Barack Obama gave black voters in 2008.

Kamala Harris

One of the most notable Democratic candidates is California Sen. Kamala Harris. While the possibility of having our first black woman president is appealing, black millennials aren’t shy about their apprehension when it comes to Harris. A common assertion is that she’s trying too hard to appeal to black voters and that she can’t use race to hide her controversial prosecutorial past.

Julian Castro

Julian Castro, the former secretary of housing and urban development under the Obama Administration, made his presidential announcement in both English and Spanish.  In an interview with immigrant and journalist Jorge Ramos, Castro claims to be “the antidote to Trump.”  On social media, at least, his message on immigration seemed to be resonating.

Elizabeth Warren

Elizabeth Warren, a senator from Massachusetts, is currently the oldest Democratic candidate in this primary. However, her age isn’t stopping her from trying to secure the youth vote. Last month, Warren drank a beer while streaming on Instagram Live. People weren’t too impressed.

Other Democratic candidates for the 2020 election are John Delaney, Tulsi Gabbard, Kirsten Gillibrand, Marianne Williamson and Andrew Yang. With other potential 2020 candidates — including Beto O’Rourke, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Joe Biden yet to announce their decisions — this could be one of the largest Democratic presidential fields in history.
