#YRreads ‘Bold Women in Black History’

There are many bold Black women to highlight not only during Black History Month, but every day of the year.

Phillis Wheatley; Mary Bowser; Ida B. Wells; Zora Neale Hurston; Bessie Coleman; Shirley Chisholm; Angela Davis; Dr. Mae Jemison; Maya Angelou; and Mary Jane Patterson are just a few bold, Black women that should be highlighted not only during Black History Month, but as a part of history.

Writer-filmmaker Vashti Harrison’s book, “Little Leaders Bold Women in Black History” profiles them and many others, including:

  • Vernice Armour – First Black female combat pilot in the U.S. Armed Forces
  • Misty Copeland – First Black principal ballerina at the American Ballet Theatre
  • Gabby Douglas – First Black gymnast to win Olympic gold for individual all-around event
  • Simone Manuel – First Black woman to win an individual Olympic medal in swimming.
  • Serena Williams – Most Grand Slam wins by a tennis player in the Open era
  • Venus Williams – First Black woman to be ranked No. 1 since tennis’ Open era began in 1968
