The cultural spotlight is shining on people who are transgender thanks to the attention being given celebrities like Laverne Cox (Orange is the New Black) and Caitlyn Jenner.

The very public transition of Jenner, former Olympian and part of the Jenner/Kardashian clan made famous by reality television, has intensified the spotlight this week. Jenner’s upcoming Vanity Fair cover was released, and the national celebrity culture discussion became a roiling boil about gender identity.

Youth Radio’s Bella King, a 20-year old trans woman, shared her story of coming out to her family and letting go of the shame she’s felt with NPR’s All Things Considered.
