Transgender Law Center Talks Bathrooms, Title IX And Legal Updates

Youth Radio reporter Desmond Meagley talks with Transgender Law Center Staff Attorney Sasha Buchert

Today the US Supreme Court announced that they will not hear arguments from the case of Gavin Grimm, a teenager from Virginia who is fighting to use the high school bathroom that corresponds with his gender identity. The case has been sent back down to the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, which had previously ruled in Grimm’s favor. Their decision was based on the Obama administration’s then-guidelines to public schools protecting transgender teens.

But that doesn’t mean Grimm’s case is decided. Since the 4th Circuit’s ruling, the Trump administration has removed the guidelines that protect trans and gender non-conforming students under Title IX.

To help understand what kinds of legal protections trans and gender non-conforming youth currently have, we talked with Sasha Buchert, a staff attorney at the Transgender Law Center

Stay tuned for the Youth Radio podcast later this week for more stories and conversation on this topic.

NOTE: This interview was recorded before the Supreme Court decision not to hear Gavin Grimm’s case.
