As a football fanatic, February is a big deal — it’s when my family hosts our annual Super Bowl watch party. I look forward to this day since the start of the season, but COVID has killed all of these expectations.
Ever since I was old enough to be in the kitchen, I helped my family out in preparing our dish for the potluck. Last year was the best one yet. We watched my favorite team, the San Francisco 49ers, go to battle. I made my traditional mediocre chips and mango salsa for our entire group. Although my team lost it was an unforgettable evening.
Unfortunately, with COVID-19, our annual in-person gathering is canceled. Instead, we’ll be virtual. Part of watching a live sporting event is being able to react at the moment. Now we’ll have to channel our emotions through characters and emojis.
While I’m saddened that our annual Super Bowl party won’t look the same, I know that we’ll look back at this time and remember how we lived through a crazy period in our lifetime — crazier than last year’s Super Bowl comeback.
