In a video released Wednesday by the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, a Chicago police officer fatally shot a 22-year-old man as he ran from police last month.

Anthony Alvarez can be seen running from police as they yelled, “Drop the gun!” before firing several shots from close range during a foot chase. He collapsed onto the front sidewalk of a home March 31 and asked police, “Why are you shooting me?”

“You had a gun,” the officer said.

A gun appears to be seen in Alvarez’s right hand in the video captured by the body camera of the officer who pulled the trigger. The video doesn’t show him pointing a gun at the officers in pursuit.

When the officer who fired the shots tells his partner to place handcuffs on Alvarez, the other officer said: “No, I’m going to render aid.”

The man’s family watched the video a day before it was released to the public and said they were left with “more questions than answers.”

Alvarez was killed by police two days after 13-year-old Adam Toledo was also fatally shot by police.
