I’m a senior in high school. For the past few months, I’ve been biting my nails, trying to narrow down my college application list. Adding to my anxiety, I’m worried about disappointing my parents — not by getting rejected, but breaking tradition.
In Cambodia, where my parents grew up, it was normal to see three generations living under one roof. But even after living in the U.S. for over 20 years, my parents still expect me to stay home for school.
I get that applying locally would allow me to save money and see my family whenever I can. But I also need room to grow beyond my parents’ eyes.
Applying out of state is a huge step for me because it’s giving me the chance to experience a different lifestyle while pursuing a higher education.
I want my parents to know that applying out of state, is not me throwing away cultural values. Instead, I’m opening a doorway of opportunities I wouldn’t have if I limit myself.
