The California GOP sparred with government officials earlier this month over the placement of unofficial ballot drop boxes across the state. To this day, you might still find those boxes in Los Angeles, Orange and Fresno counties.

To find an authorized ballot box, you will have to go to your county’s registrar of voters website or look through your voter information guide.

If you’re still not sure, as explained by the Orange County Registrar of Voters, you can call the office for a direct confirmation. Even better, when you look up a drop box’s location on their website, you can see exactly what it looks like.

All drop boxes are made of military-grade steel and bolted directly into the concrete. Their office services the drop boxes every day to maintain a strict chain of custody so votes are properly tracked.

The unofficial ballot boxes do not have the same security level as that of authorized ones. As seen in a photo by ABC7, the Republican-sponsored boxes are gray and identified with taped-on paper signs that say “Ballot Drop Box.”
