Police released bodycam footage Wednesday from the officers who killed Walter Wallace Jr. in Philadelphia.
The 27-year-old was shot and killed by officers Oct. 26 after his family called 911 for help with a domestic violence situation. The 911 calls were also released by police and are included in the video below.
Wallace had a history with mental illness, and the family’s lawyers said he was experiencing a mental health crisis which police knew about.
He was holding a knife and Philadelphia’s police union described Wallace as “lunging” at officers, but the video tells a different story. He didn’t lunge or run at officers.
Wallace’s death has sparked large protests across Philadelphia and left many wondering why police didn’t try to detain him peacefully and let family try to calm him.
