The violent riots at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. has now claimed five people as President Donald Trump publicly conceded in a prerecorded message, and vowed to a peaceful transition of power.
Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick is the latest person to die from Wednesday’s insurrection where a mob forced their way into the building. An Air Force veteran who was a staunch Trump supporter and three other people died after the riot, officials said.
Police were criticized for the department’s response to the rioters who stormed the Capitol, clashed with law enforcement and vandalized the exterior and interior of the building. Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund has since resigned.
President-elect Joe Biden said there was a double standard between the police’s reaction to the MAGA mob versus Black Lives Matter supporters during the summer of civil unrest.
“No one can tell me that if it had been a group of Black Lives Matter protesting yesterday, they wouldn’t have been treated very, very differently from the mob of thugs that stormed the Capitol. We all know that’s true. And it’s unacceptable. Totally unacceptable,” he said.
The National Guard has been placed on a 30-day mobilization, according to NBC News.Several lawmakers are now calling for Trump’s removal from office using the 25th Amendment, according to CNN.
